80’s Toy Review has been pretty quiet for a while. A little too quiet…
I have been busy finding great items from the 80’s to talk about and share.
Here is one of my latest. This one is especially important because we have recently passed the 30 year anniversary for Voltron (September, 10 2014 was the Anniversary).
There is a pretty interesting story behind the origin of Voltron in America. Originally the show was licensed from Toei Animation of Japan. None of the cartoons could be translated from Japanese so they American show creators made up the plots and dialogue.
The most interesting thing though was that the 5 lion character was not the show they had licensed. Instead it was one called Mirai Robo Daltanious which featured a Lion on the chest of the robot character. Word around the campfire is that they had only requested the footage from the “show with the lions.” The show that Toei actually sent was the current rendition of what we today call Voltron III. Of course this story is paraphrased quite a bit.
Anyway the point of my post today is to show off my latest acquisition, The red and Blue Lion with a box. The crazy thing is the toy is actually from 1981 though the cartoon came out in 1984.
Enjoy!

Just a quick comment, on my own post…
I also recently got a complete matchbox Voltron in the Box. I will do a nice little review of that very soon.
It is one of the Taiwan versions that were recalled for lead paint but very cool none-the-less.
