Like most “regular people” I am a huge Star Wars fan. I love everything about it, especially the toys. There is one toy line that I think is arguably one of the coolest Star Wars toys ever made. It was called the Star Wars Micro Collection (Not to be confused with Micro Machines).
This the toy I really started cutting my eBay teeth on about a year ago, not as a seller but as a buyer.
It all started with the realization that I had a job. (One of the follies of a toy collector: when one realized they have employment watch out wallet)
When the Micro collection was released in 1982, I was only 7 years old. There was no internet, as we know it, and my exposure to this line was only prompted by my friends across the alley from me, who seemed to get every toy that was made.
My friend Dominick brought over his Death Star World one day. I don’t recall if it was after Christmas or not but it was definitely after the movie showed up on cable on cable for the first time. It may have even still been in rotation. I just remember I knew what everything was and was excited by the spring loaded blast door. With this feature, I could rehash my favorite comedy scene over and over. You know the one where the Stormtroopers call for control to close the blast door and then the wild bunch of rebel misfits jump through just in time to block the troopers out prompting them to call for control to now open the blast doors.
You get the point, it was cool toy. Getting these toys was a thing of rarity for me. The first set I got my big sister bought me the Hoth Generator. I still have this. It is so cool. She later gave me the Hoth Ion Cannon for my birthday. By this time is was around 1984-1985 and the toy line had long since been discontinued.
I don’t really know how she came across these toys in new condition so long after. I think collectors of unopened toys were not nearly as common as they are today. I definitely played with these toys. I still have a lot of my original pieces of the ion cannon.
As a kid, I never got the Death Star set but I did manage to get the Bespin Gantry and the control room on clearance at Kaybee toys in the mid 80’s some time. It wasn’t until late last year when I thought about these old playsets that I thought about buying them for myself on eBay. I did of course find pretty much all of them except for the Millennium Falcon playset. All of the set seem to be pretty hot at times especially if they are in good condition. I went a little crazy picking up these playsets last year and ended up getting several of each one.
In the coming weeks I will be preparing my overflow playsets for sale during the holiday season. There seems to be a hardcore audience around these sets as they still do pretty well on eBay.
I will post my pictures as I get the items ready. I hope you will enjoy what I have as I “wax poetic” over some old toys. The micro collections are one of the best Star Wars toys to ever come out and sadly they just didn’t last long. Along with the playlets I will share some of my eBay tips that I use to get these items ready for sale.
