Well, I imagine I am just like you. I mean, you clicked on a website called 80’s Toy Review. Who else but a collector of aptly named items would do such a thing?
I’m Jim…
When I started this blog I hoped to build a community of people who want to talk about toys, more specifically 80s toys or 80’s inspired toys. I don’t plan to actually review very many toys from the 80’s in a way you may think. I mean, well, the consensus is already out on them. We already know what was a huge hit and flopped. “How about that rubik’s cube thingy?” Instead the term review is like from a newspaper or something like that. That doesn’t mean I won’t review some stuff. That is definitely part of the plan. Maybe some of these companies making retro stuff will send me something to unbox. Who knows?
When I listed some of my toys on craigslist, I discovered that there are quite a few others like me, who do the same thing.
(Collect everything since birth and then struggle over what to do with it)
The only difference is they haven’t been selling their items. Most of them expressed interest in selling some of their toys but didn’t really know where to start. If this is you, consider this your support group, your engraved invitation… I will help you get started as I share my experiences with becoming a seller on eBay and quite possibly soon a full blown e-commerce store.
As you might expect…
I discovered the things that I cared for, nurtured and collected for so many years were not exactly the retirement fund that I once thought. But just so, I still felt that my items were important enough and valuable to me that I still wanted to get the most that I could for each thing that I put up. So I used all the experience I could muster from my 20 years in advertising to create the best listings I could and get what these great toys were really worth.
Usually a hands-on person, I like scrub my toys and professionally clean my NES & SNES games. I replace O rings in G.I. Joes and unfreeze the joints of 30 year old Transformers among other things. All of which I will share in this space with my readers. It is definitely the opposite of your mom tossing all your stuff in the trash or selling all at a garage sale for the best offer.
Is it all worth the effort? Sometimes I am amazed at what I get for my 80s Toys, while others get far less, but even when I don’t make a nice profit, I have to say the process is reward enough.
I realize that while I think I am special I am not so different from you. You love this stuff too. Maybe like me, you forgot how great it was while it was out of sight and mind and are just digging in again and remembering that incredible journey that unlocked endless imagination and maybe shaped you as a person. Maybe you aren’t ready to part with what you have. That’s cool. I definitely get it. You might stop in just to chat and maybe learn a better way to get the dust off that old playset or turn those stormtrooper uniforms white again. Come on it and make this your hang out. I just know I have something you’ll enjoy.
